SPRING HILL - Springstead sliced up the Hudson defense for 325 yards and nearly shut out the vaunted Cobras offense during the three-quarter varsity portion of their Kickoff Classic at Booster Stadium, winning 35-14 Thursday.
Springstead running back Mike Greco had 103 yards rushing and two scores, receiver Ben Noury scored twice on end-arounds, and quarterback James Mahla was 7-for-8 passing for 126 yards. But Coach Bill Vonada was more impressed with the defense, which held reigning Pasco County passing champion Zack Wynn to 60 yards on nine of 14 passing.
"The thing that I'm most proud of is, I thought the guys played at a little bit faster speed than we've played here in a little while," Vonada said. "And that was in all phases. … I do think we're playing with more reckless abandon."
The Cobras frequently found themselves out of place on defense thanks to the Eagles' misdirection, triple-option attack, while Wynn was out-of-sorts throughout. He had five mishandled snaps amid pressure from the Eagles defense, but he said his surgically repaired left knee felt fine throughout the game. He was responsible for one of Hudson's three turnovers (all fumbles) which led to 21 Springstead points.
"It seems like everything we did something right in our offense, we turned around and did something wrong," Cobras coach Mark Nash said.
After the Cobras' junior varsity gave them an 8-0 first-quarter lead, their only varsity touchdown was scored by senior JoJo Cimino on a 1-yard plunge late in the final quarter. Junior Dylan Luke was Hudson's leading carrier with 49 yards on eight carries.
