TAMPA -- Junior C.J. Bennett threw for 241 yards in his first game as a full-time starter to lead Alonso past visiting Countryside 27-21 in the Kickoff Classic.
The Alonso varsity led 21-7 after three quarters before both teams let their junior varsities play the fourth quarter.
Bennett was 23 of 35, using mostly short passes to lead the Ravens, who finished 5-5 last season after a 5-1 start. Bennett started much of the second half of last season, but the offense sputtered down the stretch as Alonso failed to make the playoffs.
Ravens coach Mike Heldt said he is confident now that Bennett has a full spring and summer of practice under his belt and said Bennett is ready to take charge of the offense.
"We have a lot of stuff to work on between now and next week," Heldt said. "He looks good, but we had to throw too much. Our running game needs a lot of work if we are going to win this season. I don't want to throw this much all year."
