Blake Comes Back For Win

Published: August 30, 2008

TAMPA -- Blake was rolled and crushed by Boca Ciega through the first three and a half quarters, and then the Yellow Jackets, trailing 21-12 with 6 minutes remaining, turned the tables for a 24-21 win.

The comeback started with a 76-yard drive that ended with a 44-yard touchdown toss from Eugene Davenport to Phillip Davis. Less than 2 minutes later, Blake intercepted a Boca Ciega pass at the Pirates' 29. A few seconds after that, a ball floated into the hands of Michael McFarland, who twisted and stumbled into the end zone.

Final score: Blake 24, Boca Ciega 21.

"These kids just don't quit and they proved that tonight," Blake coach Sean Washington said. "We were down but we never gave up. We kept the faith."

Before the 76-yard drive, Blake had gained a total of minus-33 yards.

What the Yellow Jackets had done, however, was recover three Pirate fumbles, intercept three passes and return kickoffs of 80 and 93 yards, the first run back by Ivory Gadson for a touchdown and the second by Jeremey Williams to Boca Ciega's 2-yard line.
