Allen Runs For 210 Yards To Power Chamberlain

Published: August 30, 2008

TAMPA - If the Jesuit football team thought Chamberlain senior quarterback Dontae Aycock was going to be its main concern for Friday's Kickoff Classic, it was sadly mistaken.

Senior running back Kenny Allen exploded for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Chiefs in a 35-20 win against the host Tigers.

"My line was blocking hard and it all just worked for me," said Allen, who scored his first touchdown on a 90-yard play in the second quarter. "They were hitting Dontae hard. They thought he would get the 200 yards."

Aycock had 120 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns, but completed just five of 13 passes for 50 yards.

Jesuit closed the gap to 28-20 in the third quarter before Allen sealed the game with his second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Senior receiver Eric McGriff led the way with three touchdown catches, an interception and a 63-yard kick return. Senior quarterback Ryan James finished with 110 passing yards and three touchdowns.

"We looked really good," McGriff said. "They were third in the county and we hung with them. We scored near the red zone and if we can keep that up, we'll be really good."

BLOOMINGDALE 15,

RIVERVIEW 6

VALRICO - The signs on the opposite side of the stadium poked fun at the Bloomingdale Bulls, but the perennial doormat showed the sign makers and everyone else, 2008 may be a different kind of year.

With a new coach, new style of play and a new attitude, Bloomingdale dominated Riverview in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates.

Bloomingdale came out on its first drive, ran off 11 plays and marched 66 yards to a touchdown on quarterback Anthony Beko's 10-yard run.

Riverview ran three plays and punted. Bloomingdale ran off six more plays, marching 65 yards and scored its second touchdown when Anthony Amos took a handoff and ran it in from the 3.

Amos carried the ball 26 times, taking large chunks of time off the clock.

Riverview quarterback Alex O'Regan started the game but left early. He returned in the second half in an attempt to rally his team and ran in a 19-yard touchdown. However, O'Regan would go down to injury in the fourth, and by then Bloomingdale's defense stiffened.

NEWSOME 35,

LENNARD 14

LITHIA - Newsome's inexperience was nowhere in sight as the Wolves, who returned only six starters from last season, defeated the visiting Longhorns behind the strong running of sophomore Conner Powers.

Powers rushed 13 times for 119 yards and three touchdowns, with most of his work coming in the first half. On the Wolves' first drive, Powers rushed on six of Newsome's first seven plays, scoring from the 5-yard line on the opening drive.

"We have a bunch of offensive linemen going both ways right now," Powers said. "So I know I have to help by running hard for them just like they are blocking hard for me."

Lennard answered quickly behind two nice passes from Andrew Burdick, who connected with Brandon Stephens for a 39-yard score.

From there, however, it was the Wolves' rushing attack and strong defense that proved the difference. The Wolves' lone completion came on their second drive on a 14-yard touchdown strike from senior Robby Young to Vince Pennington. Powers added two more rushing touchdowns on 2- and 5-yard runs.

"Conner is a workhorse," Wolves coach Kenneth Hiscock said. "And we are going to get a lot from him this year."

Senior Evan O'Connor scored the Wolves' final touchdown on a 2-yard rush, and the Wolves received good rushing efforts from Devin Williams with 40 yards and Conner's brother Keller Powers adding 36 yards.

The Wolves' defense was anchored by some solid play including an interception by Andy Suslavich, a crushing blow on Burdick by Newsome senior linebacker Trenton Cornwell, and two sacks from Frank Marin.

Lennard's second score came in the final minute of the game on a rushing touchdown by Burdick. Burdick finished with 108 passing yards, but struggled to find receivers in the second half.

BRANDON 14,

SICKLES 13

Greg Leclair scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including an electrifying 78-yard punt return with 2:30 remaining, as Brandon earned a come-from-behind victory at Sickles.

Leclair, who earlier scored on a 3-yard run to pull Brandon within six, fielded a bouncing punt on his 22, cut to his left and eluded a host of Sickles defenders before cruising into the end zone with the game-winning score.

"Last year we won two games in the fourth quarter with a veteran team," Brandon coach John Lima said. "This year we've got a young group, so a big concern for us was how we'd respond at the end of games.

"Beyond that, Sickles beat us in every facet of the game. They deserved to win this game, so it better be a wakeup call for us."

Sickles, which scored touchdowns on its first two drives, rallied on its final possession. The Gryphons drove to the Eagles' 16, but a 33-yard field-goal attempt was wide left as time expired.

Sickles held a 289-224 advantage in yards, with quarterback Cullen O'Brien passing for 87 yards and Tim Adames-Beman gaining 72 yards on seven carries. Jarquez Bradshaw led Brandon with 70 yards on 16 carries, while quarterback Dillion Lassiter adding 55 yards rushing and another 46 passing.

BERKELEY PREP 44,

NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN 12

After being the go-to man on the run last season, senior Julian Crockett pretty well ran over Northside Christian, amassing just more than 200 yards in the easy win.

In the first half, Crockett reached the end zone four times, with runs of 10, 12, 50 and 78 yards for scores.

The Buccaneers, who finished last season at 5-5, began this season with an early bang. With 7:46 left in the first quarter, Crockett juked two defenders to score on the run from 12 yards out. After a 95-yard Northside touchdown gallop on the ensuing kickoff to make it 7-7, Crockett notched another touchdown run with three minutes left in the first to make it 14-7.

The Crockett streak continued at 9:35 of the second quarter, as the 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior took a Kevin Laddon handoff and ran 50 yards to make it 21-7.

After a Northside 45-yard field goal at 5:04 of the second, Crockett stormed 78 yards down midfield from another Laddon giveaway to make it 27-10 after a missed extra point.

A safety near the end of the second quarter gave Northside, a 7-3 team last year, two to make it 27-12, and a Buccaneer 23-yard kick at the end of the second made it 30-12.

Resorting to a running game, Berkeley Prep started the third quarter with a freshman Reggie Barns kickoff return for 82 yards to make it 37-12 and a Richard Klein 2-yard run into the end zone to finish the scoring.
