Published: August 30, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - There wasn't much to brag about Friday night inside Des Little Stadium, but Tarpon Springs left with a 15-12 victory over Gulf after an hour-long delay due to lightning.

Before turning things over to the JVs and backups in the third quarter, the Spongers scored on their third possession with 8:30 left in the second quarter as Danny Reyes scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

Gulf answered on its ensuing possession, also its third, with a three-play, 56-second drive that ended with Adrian Golden scoring on a 68-yard sprint around the right end.

The extra point failed, allowing Tarpon to hold onto a 7-6 advantage. Tarpon's backups scored with 8:36 left in the game while the Buccaneers' JV players ended the night with a score of their own.

In the first half, each team had two turnovers on downs and were hit with penalties. Tarpon racked up seven for 65 yards, while Gulf had five for 50 yards.

"This is it, we're 0-0," Tarpon Springs coach George Kotis told his players. "We put ourselves in a position where we didn't lose."
