Wildwood Blasts Sunlake 51-6

LAND O' LAKES Wildwood quarterback DeAndre Mitchell ran for two touchdowns as his team scored 51 unanswered points to beat Sunlake in a Kickoff Classic.

Sunlake opened the scoring on a 5-yard run by Mike Shaver with 8:18 gone. Shaver's score was set up by Jarrett Baker, who ripped the ball out of Wildwood quarterback DeAndre Mitchell's hand and raced 70 yards down the field.

Wildwood answered when Mitchell took off on a scramble and ran 44 yards for the touchdown. Cruz Rodriguez kicked the extra point, and the

Mitchell then added his second touchdown on a 6-yard quarterback keeper run with 9:58 left in the second quarter.

Wildwood's defense also got in on the act, after Jaquard Cuyler recovered a fumble by Eli Escobar and raced 49 yards for a touchdown. The score was 29-6 with 7:51 left in the second period.

Rodney Rose scored on a 3-yard run with 1:15 left in the half, with Mitchell passing to Justin Akiem for the two-point conversion.

Wildwood was carried by its rushing attack, which had 22 carries for 198 yards in the first half, with Mitchell accounting for 125 of them on seven carries. It was also boosted by a strong defensive effort, as Sunlake was held to 75 yards total offense in the first half.

Mitchell finished with nine carries for 145 yards.

"We did a lot of good things," said Sunlake coach Bill Browning. "This team Wildwood is a highly skilled team. We moved the ball well in spots. I thought we played well in the first quarter and they got a few things going. Their quarterback Mitchell is excellent."
