I am honored to have been selected to serve as an at-large-alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis and look forward to joining my fellow party members in ratifying the candidacy of Sen. John McCain as the party's nominee for president.
It is key for the party to unite behind the principles that have made it unique in our nation. As we build a platform of lower taxes, reduced spending and a commitment to the conservative principles that have made the party great, the distinctions between Sen. McCain and Sen. Barack Obama will become starkly clear. A strong executive branch must provide a check and balance to a Congress that has not been meeting the needs of Americans.
The convention process is vital to the election process. Not only does it signal the official beginning of the general election season, the conventions give voters the opportunity to learn about their respective party's platform, the issues that are of importance to the parties, and most importantly the people who are being nominated into leadership positions.
Once the convention ends and the delegates return to their respective states, the true work of the general election begins. For McCain to win in Florida, the grassroots must be mobilized. From voter registration drives to reaching out to disaffected Democrats and independents, the case must be made that McCain is the most experienced candidate to lead the United States in these rapidly changing and dangerous times.
Mike Fasano is the Republican senator for Florida District 11.
