Going Deep For NFL Youth Centers

Published: December 1, 2008

TAMPA - Volunteers collected sports equipment for needy children at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday.

Organizers will take stock today of how much they collected but said they did better than expected, considering the rain.

The collection was a joint effort of the Glazer Family Foundation and the Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee. Volunteers fanned out at stadium gates and club entrances before the Buccaneers game, collecting new and "gently used" gear from fans.

The equipment will go to the two NFL Youth Education Towns in Tampa. The youth centers, in Jackson Heights and Mort Park, were set up as part of the 2001 Super Bowl. Established in 1993, the NFL YET program has collected thousands of books and pieces of sports equipment for youth centers in Super Bowl host cities.

In advance of the February Super Bowl in Tampa, area schools will be collecting books and equipment for the centers during December.
