TAMPA - Customers of Florida Power & Light, the state's largest electric utility, will pay slightly less for electricity in 2009 because of the lower cost of coal and natural gas, which are used to generate power.
The Florida Public Service Commission today approved the utility's fuel costs for 2009.
Starting in January, the cost of 1,000 kilowatt hours will drop from $111.12 to $109.55 for FPL customers. Initially, the utility sought an $8 increase. Fuel prices, however, have plunged.
Electric utilities do not make a profit from the purchase of fuel. The costs are passed on to customers with no markup.
FPL provides power to 4.5 million customers, primarily in South Florida.
