PLANT CITY - Plant City High's Duran Lowe, who is verbally committed to Wake Forest University, was the lone Raider named to the First Team when Western Conference all-star squads were announced last week.

Lowe played anywhere on the defensive formation where needed and made the Federal Division First Team as a defensive back, the position he will likely be groomed to play in college.

The coaches of each of the four divisions in the Western Conference pick the all-conference squads. The Federal Division includes Plant City, Durant and all of the eastern Hillsborough County teams. Playoff qualifiers Spoto and Newsome had the most players honored.

Durant, which reached the 6A playoffs before falling 14-7 to Orlando's Dr. Phillips, had three players get First Team honors. Cole Gilliam, who is mulling over several Division I football scholarship honors, was named one of the top tackles and Ryan Rice made First Team running back alongside East Bay's Chaz Burrows and Newsome sophomore Conner Powers. On defense, Durant senior Austin DeVall was a First Team choice.

The First Team quarterback was Andrew Burdick from Lennard HIgh.

Plant City had three make the Second Team offense: quarterback Clint Stearns, wide receiver Cortez Hargrett and center Eddie Rosenbaum. Plant City's Denzel Drone was a Second Team defensive selection.

For Durant, Colton Bridges and Ruben Garcia made the Second Team defense, Conner Bass was the kicker, and John Hicks the kick returner.

Earlier the Western Conference top volleyball players were voted on, with three Durant players - Chelsea Morris, Kelsey Horton and Lindi Oest - on the First Team. Plant City's Ali Boggs made Second Team.

Durant reached the state tournament but fell to then-undefeated Countryside in the first round. Countryside went on to the state semifinals before falling.
