Pearl Wins 400th; USF Falls

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tyler Smith had the first triple-double in school history, helping No. 10 Tennessee romp to an 87-69 win over UNC-Asheville.

Smith finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Vols give Coach Bruce Pearl career victory No. 400.

Smith, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, got his 10th assist on Scotty Hopson's 3-pointer with 7:47 left. A minute later, Smith got a standing ovation when the feat was announced to the crowd.

Pearl, in his fourth season at Tennessee and 17th overall, joined some legendary company by winning his 400th after coaching 509 games. Only Adolph Rupp, Clair Bee, Jerry Tarkanian, Roy Williams and Henry Iba reached the 400-victory plateau in fewer games.

Bulls Blow Lead, Lose In OT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - South Florida blew a 13-point second half lead, as UAB tied the game with 12 seconds to play to send the game to overtime, before the Blazers edged the Bulls 78-77 on a pair of Paul Delaney free-throws with 14 seconds to play in overtime.
Jesus Verdejo led the Bulls (3-2) with 26 points, including all five in the overtime period, but the Bulls failed to score after his 3-pointer with 3:03 to go in the extra session gave them a 77-75 lead.

Delaney scored the final six points in regulation for the Blazers (5-2), and finished with 16 points. Lawrence Kinnard led UAB with 20 points.

NORTH CAROLINA 98, MICHIGAN STATE 63: Tyler Hansbrough scored the first basket of both halves and finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, leading top-ranked North Carolina (8-0) past No. 13 Michigan State (4-2).

NORTHWESTERN 73, FSU 59: Craig Moore scored a team-high 20 points as Northwestern (4-1) handed Florida State (7-1) its first loss of the season with a victory in the first round of the ACC/Big Ten challenge.

PITTSBURGH 78, DUQUESNE 51: Sam Young scored 23 points and DeJuan Blair was in control inside with 14 points and 17 rebounds, helping No. 3 Pittsburgh win.

XAVIER 81, AUBURN 74: B.J. Raymond scored 32 points as No. 14 Xavier remained undefeated with a victory, Sean Miller's 100th as coach.

SYRACUSE 88, CORNELL 78: Jonny Flynn had 24 points, Paul Harris added 21 points and nine rebounds as No. 16 Syracuse defeated Cornell.

WAKE FOREST 83, INDIANA 58: James Johnson scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half as No. 15 Wake Forest (7-0) routed Indiana.

Women's Games

CONNECTICUT 96, HOLY CROSS 37: Freshman Caroline Doty scored 11 points and extended her school-record streak of made 3-pointers to 10 to lead top-ranked Connecticut.

NORTH CAROLINA 72, OHIO STATE 63: Jessica Breland scored 29 points and second-ranked North Carolina held No. 18 Ohio State scoreless for more than nine minutes of the second half in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

OKLAHOMA 69, CREIGHTON 49: All-America center Courtney Paris needed a late surge to record her 99th straight double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, and No. 6 Oklahoma overcame a lethargic effort to beat Creighton.

GEORGIA TECH 70, MICHIGAN STATE 57: Alex Montgomery scored 20 points to lead Georgia Tech to an upset of No. 21 Michigan State. The Yellow Jackets (6-2) overcame a 12-point deficit to win in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

AUBURN 95, CAROLINA A&T 74: Dewanna Bonner led No. 14 Auburn with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

PITTSBURGH 66, DUQUESNE 47: Kate Popovec scored 15 points and didn't miss a field-goal attempt, Shavonte Zellous had 13 and No. 24 Pittsburgh opened the second half with a decisive run to beat city opponent Duquesne.

TAMPA 74, WARNER 41: The Spartans cruised to their sixth straight victory, easily defeating visiting Warner (formerly known as Warner Southern). The win gives Spartan head coach Tom Jessee his 299th career victory.

Angela Guiu led the way offensively for Tampa (7-1) with 14 points.
