A Tampa teenager was killed when the SUV he was riding in skidded out of control just after 1 a.m. Thursday in Lake County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The 1998 Ford SUV was traveling south on U.S. 27 near Bradshaw Road when the driver, 29-year-old Stephanie M. Reeves of Dade City, lost control and the SUV spun into the grass median, overturned several times and came to rest in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27, troopers said.
Reeves, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and listed in stable condition, highway patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Miller said this afternoon.
The two passengers in the car were not wearing seat belts and were ejected, Miller said. Shawn Christopher Shelton, 17, of 8011 10th St., Tampa, died from his injuries. Vanessa McKee, 22, of the same address, is listed in serious but stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Miller said.
Shelton and McKee were siblings, their sister Sheree Hagin told TBO.com on Friday. The Florida Highway Patrol had identified them as boyfriend/girlfriend on Thursday.
Witnesses told troopers the SUV drifted off the road. An investigator spoke to Reeves today. Reeves may have fallen asleep while driving, Miller said.
Shelton had not been a student in the Hillsborough County School District since 2006, spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. He had been studying to get his GED, Hagin said.
Shelton will be laid to rest on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Harmon Funeral Home, 5002 N. 40th Street, Hagin said.
