CLEARWATER - Police continue to receive reports of armed robberies that apparently targeted Hispanic men, even though arrests have been made.
Since October, there have been six such armed robberies, with five in the area of Drew Street and U.S. 19, said Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
There have been 51 such robberies this year, police said.
Most cases involve two male robbers. Sometimes they conceal their faces; almost always they knock their victims to the ground, kicking and punching them, or hold a gun to the victims' heads, Watts said. The robberies occur between 10 p.m. and 2:30 a.m.
Victims were shot in two of the robberies, Watts said.
Authorities do not think the same people are responsible for all the robberies because they have continued after arrests have been made.
Kevin Davis, 18, and Eddie Cowart, 29, were arrested in May; Darrell Pidgen, 19, in June; and Marlin Hendricks, 16, and Davaughan Atkins, 15, in October. Each was charged with robbery, Watts said.
In addition to extra patrols, police have distributed fliers in the affected area with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. Among the tips: Walk or ride with others. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't carry lots of cash.
Anyone with information should call the Clearwater Police Department tip line at (727) 562-4422.
