Passers-by lifted a sport utility vehicle off a driver after it rolled over in St. Petersburg this afternoon, police say. The driver later died.
The 21-year-old female driver, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, was traveling north on Interstate 275 in a 1998 Ford SUV at 4:22 p.m. when the left rear tire blew, sending it spinning toward and down the east shoulder, where it overturned, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected, and the vehicle landed with her upper torso under it, the patrol said.
Four passers-by lifted the SUV off the victim before rescue officials arrived, St. Petersburg police Lt. Joel Granata said.
The driver was tended to by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and Lealman Fire & Rescue personnel, then was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center, where she died, according to the patrol.
