TAMPA - To squash a traditional surge in property crimes during the holidays, Tampa police and Hillsborough County deputies are rounding up more than 100 people wanted on warrants.
The people sought in the operation – dubbed "Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide" – are wanted mainly on charges such as burglary, robbery and probation violations, Tampa police Capt. John Newman said today. There also are people sought on battery and traffic charges.
"Some of them are responsible for patterns of crimes," Newman said. "Most of the folks we're dealing with are not very nice people."
Robberies and property crimes typically rise this time of year, said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Capt. Clyde Eisenberg. "Maybe it's something in their childhood, not having a good Christmas. I don't know," he said.
About 80 officers and deputies are involved in the roundup, which runs through Friday. It focuses on the Sulphur Springs and Nuccio areas, roughly east from North Florida Avenue to North 56th Street and south from Hillsborough Avenue to Interstate 4 along 56th Street.
A full tally of arrests is expected Saturday.
