NEW PORT RICHEY - Sights and sounds of the holiday season will fill Sims Park on Saturday as the city and its Cultural Affairs Committee present the annual Children's Art Festival in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department's "Holiday Joy" concert.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 13 school choral groups will provide nearly nonstop holiday music at the riverfront park's amphitheater.

"Some sing, some do bell ringing," an event organizer, Angie Walcott, said. All the music will be holiday-themed, she said.

The music is the perfect accompaniment to strolling through the park and viewing all the entries in the Children's Art Festival. The festival draws about 1,500 entries from public, charter and home school students from kindergarten through high school.

The artwork is displayed along both sides of a temporary fence erected near the amphitheater. Like the musical portion of the festival, the artwork is all holiday themed.

Although the emphasis is on holiday spirit, there are prizes awarded during the youth art festival.

The Mayor's Award goes to elementary, middle and high school winners and the Cultural Affairs Committee's advisory board hands out honors, too.

There will be a break in the proceedings at 10:30 a.m., when Santa Claus arrives.

He'll give his reindeer the day off, arriving Saturday by horse-drawn carriage.

Children will be able to plead their cases for having been good all year and make their Christmas requests to the Jolly Old Elf.

In addition to the music, the art and the appearance by Santa, hayrides will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will also be refreshments for sale.
