TAMPA – Phillip Ely threw for two touchdowns and the Plant High football team survived a late rally Friday night to upset Armwood, 17-14, in the Class 4A-Region 3 Final at Dad's Stadium.
Plant advances to next Friday's state semifinal at home against Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, which upset Miami Booker T. Washington, 24-21.
Plant led, 17-6, before Armwood scored with just more than 3 minutes remaining in the game. Matt Jones' 1-yard touchdown run and Rob Jones' run on the 2-point conversion made it 17-14.
After forcing Plant to punt on its next possession, Armwood took over on its 35 with 1:50 remaining in the game. The Hawks drove to the Panthers' 15-yard line before attempting a 32-yard field with 8 seconds remaining. However, the attempt missed wide left.
