TAMPA - Efforts to rename the New Tampa Regional Library took a hit Thursday. The Tampa-Hillsborough County Library Board accepted the recommendation of its policies and bylaws committee not to change the name of the library at 10001 Cross Creek Blvd. The review committee decided neither candidate met the criteria to have a library named in their honor.
The names of two New Tampa civic activists had been submitted for consideration. Carol Poland is a longtime Hunter's Green resident and neighborhood crime watch leader. Jeri Zelinski, who died in 2002, was instrumental in prodding developers to donate land and the Hillsborough County Commission to build it.
The county commission will have the final say Dec. 17.

Temple To Honor Past President
BRANDON - To honor a man who worked hard to make Brandon's first Jewish temple a reality, the 150-member Congregation Beth Shalom will dedicate the Richard S. Glaser Center for Education & Religion during a community ceremony today.
Rabbi Betsy Torop said the dedication is an opportunity to pay homage to Glaser, who is credited with seeing that the fledgling congregation acquired property on Bryan Road and constructed a permanent home. The group had been meeting in temporary locations for a decade before the temple opened in 2000.
Glaser, Congregation Beth Shalom's past president, died in August 2007.
The ceremony begins at 7:45 p.m. at the synagogue, 706 Bryan Road. For information, call (813) 681-6547.

City Approves Sangria's Site
City council members made it official Thursday: The proposed Sangria's Tapas Bar & Restaurant can join Starbucks as a commercial anchor on the Hillsborough Avenue gateway to historical Seminole Heights.

Co-owner John Obediente said he and his colleagues may apply for construction permits in seven days. In addition to Sangria's, Obediente's company - Historic 512 - plans to open LeRoy's Gastro Pub, Myoumi Sushi Bar and leasable retail space, possibly this spring.
The restaurants and retail space will be built on the site of the former LeRoy's 4x4 Auto Service, 512 E. Hillsborough Ave, in the Seminole Heights historic district.
