TAMPA - Officers will take to the skies this morning in a more fuel-efficient helicopter that costs the Tampa Police Department $100 less an hour to operate than its old helicopter, officials said.
Police will unveil the Bell 206 Long Ranger 4 at the department's hangar at 10 a.m.
The department's aviation unit bought the helicopter using the $2.1 million profit from the sale of a Bell 407 with a four-bladed rotor system, officials said.
The new helicopter has a smaller engine with a two-bladed system, making it more cost effective. It can travel at up to 140 mph, officials said.
