MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Perhaps it's somewhat anticlimactic, but the University of South Florida is officially headed to the magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl.
"We're excited to have USF," said St. Petersburg Bowl executive director Brett Dulaney Saturday night. "I think with USF coming our chances of a sellout are greater. I also think USF will have time to come down and support St. Petersburg economically and we'll have some packages for students to stay down on the beach."
USF's opponent hasn't been officially determined, but it mostly likely will be Memphis (6-6). Other Conference USA teams that technically could be selected to play USF are Tulsa (10-3) and Houston (7-5). The hold-up in announcing USF's opponent is that the GMAC Bowl, which gets the second selection from Conference USA, has said it won't make an announcement until Sunday.
The game is Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m. at Tropicana Field. It will be televised on ESPN2.
Tickets are $30 and available through tickermaster.com or starting Sunday at GoUSFBulls.com beginning Sunday. Tropicana Field's capacity for football is 33,000.
Dulaney said having USF in the inaugural bowl will give Bulls fans that were unable to attend USF's first three bowls in Charlotte, N.C.; Birmingham, Ala., and El Paso, Texas an opportunity to experience a bowl game atmosphere.
The bowl's activities begin Dec. 16. For a complete list, go to stpetersburgbowl.com.
