TAMPA - Twenty-seven children undergoing cancer treatment and their families experienced a private air show at MacDill Air Force Base today, complete with paratroopers and tours of airplanes.
The Children's Cancer Center helped organize the outing because the children's compromised immune systems prevent them from being around crowds and participating in many activities, executive director Mary Ann Massolio said.
"They're missing school field trips," she said. "They'd never be out here on chemo or in a crowd at an air show."
Air Force Col. Larry Martin said he and the other staff were thrilled to see how attentive but excited the youngsters were.
"They tell us that we're their heroes, but the children are really our heroes for all the things they go through and the hard work that they do," he said.
News Channel 8 photojournalist James Farquhar contributed to this report.
