A 30-year-old man died last night after he hit a concrete median on Memorial Causeway and was thrown from his motorcycle, Clearwater police say.
The road was shut down just before 11:30 p.m. as units from the Clearwater Fire Department and Clearwater police responded to the crash. Traffic flow resumed shortly after 4 a.m., according to a police media release.
According to police, Matthew Gwaltney was seen driving at a high rate of speed going eastbound on Memorial Causeway. He hit a raised concrete median, lost control of his vehicle and was thrown into a light pole, the statement said.
The motorcycle continued eastbound across the median taking out three small palm trees and other shrubbery, before coming to its final resting point in the eastbound median lane of the Causeway, police said.
Gwaltney, E. 97th Ave. in Tampa, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but when he hit the light pole, the helmet came off, according to the police statement.
