Hillsborough County students brought holiday cheer, gifts and lots of smiles to dozens of senior citizens Saturday as part of the seventh annual Christmas gift program from Caregiver's Helping Hand.
Youth volunteers delivered gift bags filled with body lotions, body wash, shower gel, T-shirts, warm socks and artwork to several nursing homes and assisted living facilities, while the Helping Hand Community Choir performed holiday songs.
"When seniors see the kids come in, you can see their faces light up," said Richedean Hills-Ackbar, the group's founder. "This teaches the students about giving back to the community and that older people are the same as they are. We all want someone to show us they care."
Caregiver's Helping Hand, a nonprofit student volunteer organization, plans to provide holiday gifts to more than 2,700 people at 14 senior centers this year, Hills-Ackbar said.
Last year, they delivered more than 2,100 gift baskets to 11 adult facilities in Hillsborough County, she said.
The group is still accepting donations - of anything that a senior might like - for the holiday season.
