WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest remained on course for a second consecutive men's soccer national championship as it swept aside South Florida 5-0 in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (21-1-1) took a 14th-minute lead through Jamie Franks and doubled their advantage a little over a minute later on a goal by Sam Cronin.
"All year, when they get one goal on teams, they have been known to get a second one pretty quickly after that," South Florida coach George Kiefer said. "They're very good at pressuring you."
The Bulls (15-5-3) fell further behind five minutes later, when Lyle Adams found the net. Marcus Tracy scored his 13th of the season in the 28th minute.
"I'm very excited for my team," Demon Deacons coach Jay Vidovich said. "We had a tremendous start to the match. Jamie got us off to a great start with his goal and then Sam had a great response goal a minute later and set the tone for everything.
"I'm tremendously happy with how we played and defended right from the beginning. Hats off to South Florida. They're a very good team. In the second half, they got the job done by holding us to one goal. Our guys did a fantastic job the entire game."
South Florida managed nine shots, with Jordan Seabrook hitting the target twice, but was unable to find the net.
The Big East champion Bulls' Elite Eight run is the longest in program history, tying the1997 team that reached the national semifinals.
