ST. PETERSBURG - Two men rescued from Old Tampa Bay this morning by a Coast Guard crew have been identified as Hieu Trung La, 25, and Huong Nguyem, 23.
The men's 12-foot boat overturned near Gandy Bridge about 2:45 a.m., the Coast Guard said. Trung La used his cell phone to call for help, saying he and Nguyem were clinging to the bridge's pilings, authorities said.
A Coast Guard crew aboard a 25-foot boat rescued the pair at 3:10 a.m. They were taken to Tampa General Hospital to be treated for hypothermia, authorities said.
Neither man was wearing a life jacket, and they were relying on the cell phone rather than a marine radio to call for help.
The Coast Guard advises against boaters relying on cell phones and recommends boaters wear life jackets.
