SEMINOLE - A Pinellas County school bus rear-ended a pickup towing a trailer this morning, injuring the two people in the truck, Seminole fire officials say.
The three people in the school bus – two students and the driver -- were not seriously injured, said Alison Shanabrook, spokeswoman for Seminole Fire Rescue.
The bus rear-ended the trailer on the pickup at 8:48 a.m. on Park Boulevard at the 83rd Street, Shanabrook said. About 2 gallons of oil leaked from the truck. The two people in the truck had minor injuries and were transported to St. Petersburg General Hospital, she said.
School bus driver Marina Koutsevitch, 32, of St. Petersburg, was eastbound when she tried to stop for a red light at 83rd Street and failed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The bus skidded and hit the trailer. The truck was stopped for the light, the patrol said.
The trailer disconnected and was crushed between the two vehicles; the school bus rotated slightly, the patrol said.
Koutsevitch was charged with careless driving, the patrol said. She was not injured.
One of the students onboard was Drew Rosenfield, 11, of Clearwater, who had minor injuries but was not transported to a hospital, the patrol said. The other student, Josh Coston, 12, of Seminole, had no injuries, the patrol said.
The driver of the pickup – Mark C. Earls, 27, of Largo – and his passenger, Tad Merkley, 21, of St. Petersburg – were treated for minor injuries.
