A man accused of robbing a Lakeland bank on Friday was arrested today in Sarasota, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Edgar Eugene Stephenson, 53, was arrested by Sarasota County sheriff's deputies about noon, authorities say. Information from witnesses linked Stephenson, of Sarasota, to a robbery of a Fifth Third Bank in Lakeland on Friday, Polk sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said in a statement.
Deputies say Stephenson walked into the bank at 1011 Highway 540A and demanded money in small bills. He was carrying a plastic Publix grocery bag and placed it on the counter in front of the teller.
Deputies say Stephenson did not show a weapon but told the teller, "I'm not kidding."
No one was hurt during the robbery.
Stephenson was booked this afternoon at Sarasota County Jail.
