TAMPA - Cincinnati's Brian Kelly was a unanimous choice for coach of the year, while Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy and linebacker Scott McKillop were the offensive and defensive players of the year in the media's second annual All-Big East football team.
The Bearcats, who won the league title under Kelly, dominated the team, with eight players selected. The 25-player team was selected by eight media members, each of whom covers one of the league's teams. The team was compiled by The Tampa Tribune.
There were eight unanimous selections on the team: McCoy, McKillop, Rutgers WR Kenny Britt, Louisville center Eric Wood, UConn RB Donald Brown, Cincinnati DE Conner Barwin, Cincinnati CB Mike Mickens and Cincinnati return specialist Mardy Gilyard.
McKillop received five of eight votes to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Mickens had two votes and Barwin one.
Four players received votes for Offensive Player of the Year, with McCoy (four votes) edging Brown (two votes). West Virginia QB Pat White and Britt also received one vote each.
White edged Rutgers' Mike Teel by one vote to be selected as the media's All-Big East quarterback.
Each team, except Syracuse, was represented on the 25-player team. Cincinnati led the way with eight players, followed by Pittsburgh and West Virginia with four each, Rutgers and USF three each, UConn two and Louisville one.
West Virginia had a league-high three offensive players, while the Bearcats had a league-best four defensive players on the team.
Eight players were named to the media's All-Big East team for a second consecutive season: McCoy, White, Wood, McKillop, Mickens, West Virginia OT Ryan Stanchek, USF DE George Selvie and Cincinnati P Kevin Huber.
The voters for the media's All-Big East team were: C.L. Brown, Louisville Courier-Journal; Desmond Conner, Hartford Courant; Bob Hertzel, Fairmont-Times West Virginian; Bill Koch, Cincinnati Enquirer; Tom Luicci, Newark Star-Ledger; Brett McMurphy, Tampa Tribune; Donnie Webb, Syracuse Post-Standard; and Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The coaches' All-Big East team is expected to be released by the league office on Wednesday.
