The body of a woman was found at the end of a dock at Hammock Park in Dunedin this morning, and she apparently took her own life, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
She has been identified as Mary Beth Smith, 47, of Dunedin.
Smith had an argument with her husband the night before, said Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Marianne Pasha. There was some confusion this morning as to whether she was staying at a relative's house, but after family members concluded that was not the case, they started looking for her, Pasha said.
They looked in Hammock Park, 1900 San Mateo Drive, because the woman loved to visit there, Pasha said. A nephew found her at the end of the dock a little after 8 a.m., Pasha said. She had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Pasha said.
No one is known to have witnessed the suicide, but residents of a mobile home park across a creek from the park saw deputies at the scene with the body, Pasha said.
