John Tesh Shares Tips, Music With 'Daytime'

Published: December 8, 2008

John Tesh was in the building Friday and he'll be on "Daytime" today.

The composer, pianist, former "Entertainment Tonight" co-host and current radio star was in the Bay area last week to perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, his third visit to that venue.

He dropped by the "Daytime" studio to play a few selections from his new "Best of Christmas" CD and chat it up with hosts Dave Nemeth and Cyndi Edwards.

Tesh's 4-year-old syndicated radio show, "Music and Intelligence for Your Life," now airs weekdays on WMTX, 100.7 FM.

"It gives me something to go to every day," he said, noting that the radio gig was inspired by his wife, actress Connie Selleca, who would have stacks of magazines around the house with articles bookmarked for future reference.

"But she never had time to read them," he said. "And there is a wealth of how-to information and tips for improving your life in magazines so my staff researches and finds all these factoids that we share."

Culled from publications such as "Better Homes and Gardens," "Psychology Today, "Redbook" and just about every other magazine are thousands of tips, such as:

•Caffeine can improve your mood and your memory and alleviate migraine pain.

•Women are twice as likely as men to end their relationship with a text message.

•The smell of peppermint is known to energize and citrus can help you focus.

•Women who wear red on dates will find men are more attentive and generous.

In between the factoids, he plays easy-listening music with a New Age bent. His show promises to make you "the smartest person in the room."

"Daytime" and The Tampa Tribune are owned by Media General and we share space in the News Center building, so I popped in on Tesh's visit.

We had a mutual friend in the late Emmy-winning sports director Andy Kindle, a longtime Tampa resident who died of a heart attack in March 2007.

Kindle, who directed NFL games for CBS Sports and Fox Sports, worked with Tesh in the 1980s when both were traveling the globe covering events such as the Tour de France.

Tesh, 56, also once worked as a reporter for an Orlando TV station. This was before he spent 10 years on "ET."

"Now I'm doing what I always wanted to do," he says. "I started playing piano when I was 6."

Tesh's taped appearance on "Daytime" (10 a.m., WFLA, Channel 8) coincides with the national launch of the program on more than 90 stations nationwide that carry RTN (Retro Television Network) programs.

RTN offers stations a wide selection of reruns of vintage TV series, from "Quincy" and "Rockford Files" to "Wagon Train" and "Dragnet." It gives "Daytime" access to more than 53 million homes.

BIG, BIG GAME: Fox Sports plans to broadcast the BCS national championship game in about 150 movie theaters across the country in 3-D.

Ticket prices and specific theater locations have yet to be announced. Stay tuned.

REMINDER: In case you missed the announcement, the series finale of "Boston Legal" on ABC tonight is being pre-empted by WFTS, Channel 28, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers versus Carolina Panthers.

WFTS will air the episode at 4 p.m. Sunday. Also pre-empted is "A Charlie Brown Christmas," which will repeat at 8 p.m. Dec. 15. The "Boston Legal" finale will be available at abc.com beginning Tuesday.

TUNE IN TONIGHT

"Three Tenors Christmas," 8 p.m., WEDU, Channel 3

Recorded in 1999, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti sing traditional holiday songs.
