CLEARWATER - A man who crashed a sport utility vehicle into a Clearwater police cruiser before leading police on a chase eventually was found hiding behind a big-screen TV, police say.
Donta Bryant, 44, of St. Petersburg, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement agent, fleeing, resisting arrest without violence, and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
About 8 p.m. Monday, a police officer stopped a 2004 Dodge Durango near Myrtle Avenue and Hart Street for an undisclosed traffic violation, said Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
As the officer approached the Durango, Bryant put the vehicle in reverse and hit the accelerator in what police say was an attempt to strike the officer, Watts said. The Durango hit the squad car and fled.
Bryant left the vehicle in the 900 block of Metto Street and was chased into a home there, Watts said. It appeared Bryant had escaped through a back window. After searching the area with police dogs, officers returned to the home and noticed a large entertainment center appeared to have been moved.
Officers moved the television and found Bryant, Watts said.
