BRANDON - A deputy shot an aggressive dog today after authorities say it was part of a pair of canines that bit two people in Brandon this afternoon.

Cheryle Peterson, 61, went to pick up her mail outside her home at 1006 Meadow Lane when two dogs ran up to her and one bit her right leg, said Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman Vida Morgan. The incident happened about 2:15 p.m.

About the same time Peterson had run inside to call Hillsborough County Animal Services, Shelia Ashcraft, 43, was walking past Peterson's house on the sidewalk when the same dogs bit her leg, deputies said.

Sheila Ashcraft, of 2301 Briana Drive, was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital for her wounds. Her son, Joshua Ashcraft, said his mother was walking to work as she usually does when the attack happened.

As Hillsborough deputy James Paes walked up to the home of the dogs at 1001 Meadow Lane, one of the canines charged at him. Paes fired one round and shot Jack, a boxer-hound mix, on its right rump.

The dog ran away, but was soon found by Paes and animal services. Jack, and the other dog, Baby, a shepherd-collie mix, were taken into custody by animal services, said spokeswoman Marti Ryan.

The dogs' owner doesn't know how they got out, Ryan said. The dogs have all their vaccinations and haven't attacked anyone before, she said.

Animal services will cite the owner for the dogs being at large.

Ryan said the owner, whose name hasn't been released, is "very remorseful."

"He feels so bad, he's considering turning in the dogs to animal services," Ryan said.

Joshua Ashcraft said his mother, Sheila, felt bad for the dog because she too is the owner of a dog – a pit bull.
