ST. PETERSBURG - Dozens of parents, students and faculty members at Rio Vista Elementary gathered for a Save Our School rally Monday morning, holding signs and chanting "Save Rio Vista."
Rio Vista is one of five schools in Pinellas County that may be forced to close next year as the result of a $40 million budget shortfall. The other schools are Palm Harbor Elementary, Gulf Beaches Elementary in St. Petersburg, and Kings Highway Elementary and North Ward Elementary in Clearwater.
Rio Vista is "A" rated, and parents there can't understand why school leaders picked it. School board members held a workshop last week to discuss the situation, and they plan to discuss it again at today's school board meeting.
A final vote on the closure issue is expected in January.
