TAMPA - The Tampa Catholic girls basketball team has played third fiddle to St. Pete Catholic and Academy of the Holy Names the past several years. Crusaders coach Nancy Kroll is hoping to change that.
A 77-54 victory against Academy last Friday night is a step in the right direction. St. Pete Catholic has won the district and Academy has finished runner-up the past four seasons, leaving Tampa Catholic on the outside looking in at playoff time. The Crusaders hope to build off the victory and make the postseason for the first time since 2004.
Tampa Catholic overcame a sloppy first half by dominating the Jaguars in the second half. Juniors Colette Eule and Sarah Brennan combined for 42 points.
It was Kroll's 104th victory. She reached the 100-win mark during a Thanksgiving tournament.
"I have been blessed with some good teams," Kroll said. "If you do it long enough, hopefully you'll get the hang of it."
