TAMPA - Local artist Eileen Goldenberg is one of three finalists for the national "My Wendy, My Way" Art Contest, which boasts a $25,000 award.
Goldenberg's painting of the fast food chain's classic Wendy's icon dressed for the Gasparilla Parade and frolicking on Bayshore Boulevard "captured the spirit" of the contest, said spokeswoman Lauren Knox.
The artist "was supposed to interpret the Wendy's icon into the local community," she said this morning. Three judges will determine the winner based on the most creative rendition of the girl who inspired a "legacy of quality and fresh food."
Goldenberg's painting depicts a festive day along Bayshore, including Wendy flying a kite, a friend riding a dolphin and another walking a dog. Tampa icons, including logos for local sports franchises, the University of Tampa minarets and Gasparilla pirates also are incorporated into the work.
Goldenberg, 53, is a longtime resident of Davis Islands and is well known in the community for her work. She has participated in many local charitable and public art projects, including "Empty Bowls," "Tour of Turtles" for the Outdoor Arts Association and UT's recent "Victorian Draw."
She is competing against artists Kristen Phillips of Kansas City, Mo., and Jessica Harms of Atlanta.
The winner will be announced Wednesday.
