Gulf sweeper Dani Schulman was named a captain on this year's girls soccer team, despite being only a sophomore, after she was selected All-Sunshine Athletic Conference as a freshman.

You play sweeper, not one of the glamour positions. Explain what it's like to play that position.

Being a sweeper is very important. You're basically the last defender. You don't have anyone covering you, you cover everyone else. You don't score a lot of goals but that's OK; I'm not really a goal scorer. You see the whole field and can help everyone else out.

Your team is 6-3-3 and plays in a wide-open district (Class 4A-8). How has your play been as a team and what do you expect?

I think we're having a learning year because we have a lot of new people and we lost a lot of people from last year. I think we're doing very well with the new people and the new defense we have. We work well as a team, so everything is going all right.

You're one of the captains and that's unusual for a sophomore. What was it like to earn that honor?

It's a pretty big honor. I'm not the biggest leader, but being the sweeper you have to be loud and you have to be able to tell everyone where they need to be.

As a freshman, you earned All-Sunshine Athletic Conference honors. What was that like?

I didn't really know how big it was. I guess it's a big honor for someone playing high school soccer for the first time. It was really cool. I was very happy about it.

I recognize your last name. Did you have siblings who were athletes at Gulf?

Yeah, I have a lot of family. I have a cousin that just graduated [Jordan Schulman] and she played basketball. My uncle [Paul Schulman] is the boys basketball coach at Gulf. Everyone knows the Schulmans. It's not a problem but everyone is always telling me that they know my uncle or my dad. I guess the attention is all right.
