GOWERS CORNER - Three adults lost their home and were sent to a hospital Monday morning because of a blaze sparked by a malfunctioning medical oxygen generator, according to Pasco Fire Rescue.
"It's a total loss," said Assistant Chief Mike Ciccarello, estimating the damage at $118,000.
The call came in around 10:30 a.m., and about 15 minutes later, engines were at 12125 Barbara Road. The fire was under control 15 minutes after that.
The residents were inside when the blaze broke out but made it out without burns before firefighters arrived, Ciccarello said. All three were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation, he said.
When firefighters arrived, the roof of the 1,800-square-foot wood-frame home was burning off, Ciccarello said. Windy conditions likely contributed to the speed with which the fire consumed the home, located in the Kent Grove neighborhood, he added.
A downed power line ignited around the home and fire spread to a wooded area, but that was also quickly knocked down.
According to property records, the home sits on 2 acres and is owned by Jimmie and Brenda Deskins.
The family didn't need help from the American Red Cross, Ciccarello said, because several relatives live in the neighborhood and plan to take care of them.
