GIBSONTON - Leandro Mesquita scored twice and added an assist as undefeated Durant gained the inside track to the top seed in the Class 6A-District 8 boys soccer tournament with a 3-2 victory against previously unbeaten East Bay on Tuesday night.
After building pressure through most of the second half, Mesquita's curling free kick from the left edge of the penalty area - originally intended as a cross - found its way through to the right corner of the net to put the Cougars up 2-1 with 17 minutes to go.
Durant (6-0-0) added a third goal five minutes later, as Mesquita found Freeman Bass for a header that gave the Cougars a two-goal lead. Miguel Cerveleon scored for East Bay in stoppage time, but it was too late for the Indians to rally for a tying goal.
Mesquita had given the Cougars the lead from the penalty spot in the second minute, shooting into the right corner after forward Cecil Clarke had been brought down by East Bay's Walter Pimental.
East Bay (3-1-2) tied the game in the 14th minute as Forrest Meredith ghosted in at the far post to head home an angled free kick by Josh Walker.
