Port Of Tampa Installs Crane

Published: December 10, 2008

TAMPA - The Port of Tampa is installing a $4.6 million mobile harbor crane that can handle bulk and container cargo as well as large items such as yachts.

The crane, built in Germany and shipped by sea to Tampa, will augment three rail-mounted gantry cranes the port purchased and relocated from New Jersey to handle container cargo.

The new crane can lift 120 tons and eventually will work with newer, larger vessels built to take advantage of the Panama Canal expansion. It will be able to handle ships carrying 9,600 20-foot-long cargo containers and reach across 17 rows of containers.

On Dec. 1, the port welcomed its largest container vessel to date, the 4,250-container capacity Zim Shekou. The ship is part of Zim Integrated Shipping's weekly service to the Port of Tampa. Zim Integrated's Asia-Gulf Express route links Tampa to ports in China, Japan, Korea, Panama and Jamaica.
