TAMPA - Southwest Airlines on May 9 will trim one daily round-trip flight between Tampa and four destinations - Fort Lauderdale; Hartford, Conn.; Indianapolis; and Providence, R.I. - but it will maintain nonstop service between Tampa and those cities in a systemwide reduction of flights.
Tampa International Airport's busiest carrier will serve Fort Lauderdale with eight daily flights, Providence with two, and Hartford and Indianapolis with one each on schedules from May 9 to June 26, the airline announced.
Tampa fared better than Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, which will lose six and eight flights, respectively. Southwest eliminated 32 round-trip flights nationwide and added 19.
Florida's reductions coincide with the seasonal slowdown of visitor traffic.
"In today's environment, it is more important than ever to maximize our productivity with our aircraft," Southwest Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly said in a release. The airline will be "eliminating unproductive flights and reallocating our aircraft to match supply with demand."
