A 63-year-old woman thwarted an attempt by a young woman to take her vehicle in a Palm Harbor parking lot Wednesday night, even though the would-be carjacker pistol-whipped her, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Surveillance video and photographs of the attacker were released this afternoon. The images were from a bar across the street from the parking lot, where the younger woman went after the attack, deputies said.
About 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of a Target department store at 900 E. Lake Road, the 63-year-old was on her way to her vehicle when she was approached by a woman wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, the sheriff's office said.
The woman ordered her into her vehicle, and she complied. Once the 63-year-old was inside, the woman hit her with the gun, the sheriff's office said. The two struggled for the car keys, and the older woman was able to set off the panic button on her keys, which alerted people nearby. The younger woman fled.
The attacker is white, about 25 years old and 5 feet 6 inches tall. In addition to the gray hooded sweatshirt, she was wearing black pants and black gloves.
The 63-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Carl Vitro of the robbery and homicide unit at (727) 582-6200. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
