TAMPA - It might not be the bowl game the University of South Florida envisioned for itself at the start of the season, but Coach Jim Leavitt continues to embrace the advantages of playing in the inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl.
"I love all bowls that you go to. You want the BCS if you can, but I love this situation," Leavitt said of being able to conduct every practice on campus leading up to the Dec. 20 game against Memphis. "Do you know how many bowl games we've been to where we froze in practice?"
Leavitt believes the St. Pete bowl will become an extremely desirable destination for teams not only because of the weather but also for recruiting.
"This bowl is going to get pretty big," he said, "because everybody wants to be in Florida."
ODDS AND ENDS: USF has only 1,500 of its 10,000-ticket allotment remaining. Cost is $30 for nonstudents and $10 for students. ... Freshman quarterback Evan Landi and Rich Rachel, who is the director of high school relations for football, helped Santa Claus hand out bags of toys to DeSoto Elementary students Wednesday.
