TAMPA - A three-play, 80-yard drive halfway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as Plant High defeated Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, 33-21, Friday night at Dad's Stadium to advance to the Class 4A state football championship.
Plant will play Tallahassee Lincoln, a 30-12 victor over Seabreeze, in the 4A Championship on Dec. 20 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando at 1 p.m.
Plant survived a big scare with just more than 2 minutes remaining when Dwyer quarterback Bradley Wallace connected on an 83-yard touchdown pass to Robert Clark, only to have the play brought back on a holding penalty.
Plant's winning drive began on its 20. A 52-yard run by Plant receiver DeAndre Queen on a reverse gave the Panthers a first down at the Dwyer 28. Running back Marco Cobb followed with a 24-yard run to the Dwyer 4. From there, Cobb plunged in on the next play.
The game marked the return of Plant quarterback Aaron Murray, who missed the last seven games with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.
