Young Girls Are On The Run

Published: December 12, 2008

PALMA CEIA - Fifth-grade girls at Roosevelt Elementary School are running in circles and quite happy to be doing so. About three months ago, some couldn't complete one lap.

Come Saturday, they will be running 3.1 miles in the Tampa Bay Lightning Reindeer Run.

As part of Girls on the Run Hillsborough County, organized by the Ophelia Project Tampa Bay, girls are learning to bolster their self-esteem with a program emphasizing social and emotional well-being and working toward a short-term goal - completing a 5-kilometer run.

The girls meet twice a week for one hour after school with volunteer coaches, following a curriculum provided by the Ophelia Project.

DEP Delays Landfill Decision

DADE CITY - The state Department of Environmental Protection will wait until Jan. 12 to announce its final decision on permitting a controversial landfill proposed for property south of Dade City.

Largo-based Angelo's Aggregates wants to open a household waste landfill on 90 acres off Enterprise Road. The proposal has drawn opposition from a variety of community groups in eastern Pasco County.

The new date is a 30-day extension on DEP action that had been scheduled for today. DEP spokeswoman Pamala Vazquez said the agency needed more time to review public comments related to the proposal.

She said the agency also wanted to avoid taking action during the holidays when people on both sides of the issue may be distracted.

Group In Need Of Donated Toys

TAMPA - With the number of needy children up and the number of donated toys down considerably, the Child Abuse Council's annual Holiday Store toy drive is desperately seeking donations, especially for infants.

The council collected 4,500 toys last year, volunteer coordinator Maria Lewis said. This year, the staff has received 1,500 toys.

The council needs nearly 500 toys for the youngest children, as well as toys for ages 9 to 12. It accepts new toys but not stuffed animals, books or violent toys.

Toys can be dropped off at the council, 3108 W. Azeele St., through Tuesday. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call (813) 673-4646 for information.
