University of South Florida students celebrate their graduations on USF's four campuses, in Tampa, Lakeland, Sarasota and St. Petersburg, today, Sunday and Monday. Though the fall commencement exercises are typically smaller than the spring's, this year brings several firsts:
•A total of 3,712 students are graduating this fall, compared with 3,656 last year.
•The first class of certified registered nurse anesthetists will be graduating in Tampa, and all 12 have already found jobs.
•The first two students in the recently approved master of fine arts in fiction writing will graduate in Tampa. They are husband and wife, Ryan and Shannon Zimmerman.
•Former Gov. Bob Martinez's granddaughter, Lydia Keen, will be among the USF St. Petersburg graduates. She will receive a degree in English, with a focus on technical and professional writing.
•The graduates come from 92 countries and 29 states.
•A posthumous outstanding senior award will be presented in the name of Alejandro Solis, who would have graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance and management from USF Polytechnic in Lakeland. Solis died Oct. 20 after a vehicle accident.
