After The Ball, Then What?

Published: December 13, 2008

By now President-elect Barack Obama must know how Abraham Lincoln felt after winning that long campaign for election and finding the nation in a political crisis. His mission was to preserve a union of contentious, albeit prosperous, citizens.

The scope of Obama's mission is much greater. It is not a divided nation but the entire planet that is in a crisis politically and theologically while suffering economically and environmentally.

I respectfully suggest that Obama forego the traditionally lavish inaugural celebration parties and balls and instead appeal to all those throughout the country - and the world - who are able to begin the new year by contributing talents and resources toward reducing poverty and hostility.

May the God of all people help Obama and all of us accomplish the mission of reconstruction and love.
