DADE CITY - Women who have routine mammograms at Pasco Regional Medical Center now have access to the latest diagnostic techniques. The center recently installed a mammography system, the GE Senographe 2000D, that will help physicians detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier and more accurately.
This system, a full-field digital mammography system, is designed and manufactured by GE Medical Systems to provide physicians with clear and precise all-digital images rather than images on X-ray film.
"Now my patients have a new and powerful tool in the detection and fight against breast cancer," Veronica Socas said in a news release. Socas is an obstetrician and gynecologist with Verssa Women's Center.
"This new system at Pasco Regional Medical Center allows me to offer my patients state-of-the-art mammograms that are faster and easier than before."
In 2007, according to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women and about 40,460 were expected to die from breast cancer.
"Digital technology will help us provide the most advanced care for our patients," said Michael Weiss, obstetrician and gynecologist with Women's Health of Pasco. "A precise diagnosis is the first step toward getting a patient treated and on the road to good health."
He said there are advantages to a digital system.
"The images are clear and easy to read, and it offers a better view of the breast," Weiss said, "especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with all breast tissue types."
