FORT LAUDERDALE - For the second consecutive year, the Largo High football team made it to the Class 5A state semifinals. And for the second straight year, it was St. Thomas Aquinas that ended the Packers' season.
Ryan Becker threw three touchdowns Friday night and the Raiders advanced to the Class 5A state championship by defeating Largo, 35-14.
St. Thomas Aquinas (14-0), the nation's top-ranked team in four major national polls (USA Today, ESPN, PrepNation.com and Rivals.com) will meet Lakeland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
The Raiders took a 28-0 lead in the third quarter before Largo (13-1) mounted a comeback. Mike Marry scored on a pair of runs (14 and 5) to cut the deficit in half with 6 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the game. The Packers' late push forced Aquinas to do something it hadn't done much of this season: play its regulars late in the game. In fact, going into the game, Aquinas had outscored its opponents 604-96.
The Raiders put the game out of reach with Becker's third touchdown pass of the night, a 4-yard score to James White with 2 minutes remaining.
