Regarding "Borderline Treason" (Letters, Dec. 9):
America was not founded on Christian values; it was founded by Deists, who believed a higher power created the universe but were skeptical about the Bible and Christianity.
Therefore, you will find no mention of Jesus Christ or the Bible in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.
And if this country sticks to its founding principles, you will never see a particular religion given a "preferred" status, which is what the author of "Borderline Treason" seems to endorse.
As for the current national motto, "In God We Trust," it was not the motto when America was founded. It was first adopted in 1956. And it does not imply Christianity, but rather a belief in a higher power.
The next time you see the word "religion" or "God" in a government document, I hope you will realize that those are generic terms and are never intended to apply only to Christians.
