GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Winter low tides have pushed snook, redfish and trout out of the shallow water and into the deeper sandy holes, where they make easy targets for anglers who can locate and get to the holes.
Captain Geoff Page knows where these holes are and he guided me and the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew to some great fishing this week.
Using Saltwater Assassin quarter-ounce soft plastics in a mullet-like color, we caught fish all morning by bouncing the jigs in the sand holes. As an added bonus, a dozen flounder also were caught.
Silver trout have moved in along the Gulf beaches. Good reports are coming from the hard bottom area north of the Redington Pier. Love Lures in pink or silver fleck have been the best colors.
Speckled trout are biting well in the Dunedin area, reports Vance Tice of Tightlines Tackle. Drifting the grass flats with soft plastics or live shrimp under a cork has been producing fast action.
Speckled trout is catch and release only from Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs south until Dec. 31.
Offshore grouper fishing continues to be hot inside of 10 miles, report the Miss Pass-A-Grille and Friendly Fisherman party boats.
Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Sports Network.
